Large mines like Dickenson Mines and Cochenour-Willans Gold Mines (Cochenour-Willans) often operated smaller mines as subsidiaries. More often than not the production totals of these subsidiaries are included in the parent companies production totals. Wilmar Mines Ltd. was one such mine for Cochenour-Willans. Located just east of the Cochenour-Willans site, it only made sense that Cochenour-Willans would hold interest in Wilmar Mines.
Martin McNeely staked a block of 15 claims in 1927, and he created Martin McNeely Mining (McNeely Mining) to perform stripping, trenching and drilling. McNeely Mining continued work on the property into the mid-1930’s, work stalling when Canada entered the Second World War. Exploration resumed in 1944 and continued through 1946.
In 1958, Cochenour-Willans approached McNeely Mining about partnering with them on their property. Wilmar Mines was created to take over the property. Although jointly owned by Cochenour-Willans and McNeely Mining, it was Cochenour-Willans that operated Wilmar Mines. Wilmar Mines sunk an internal shaft that connected to the Cochenour-Willans underground network at the 1,300 metre (4,265 foot) and 1,500 metre (4,921 foot) levels.
Ore from the Wilmar Mines property started to be processed in 1961 and closed when Cochenour-Willans did in 1971. Wilmar Mines contributed roughly $2,527,680 worth of gold to the Cochenour-Willans production totals in the ten years it produced.
