Like most mining projects, the claims that became Abino Gold Mines were originally staked during the 1926 Red Lake gold rush. However, it was not until Albert Kay (McKenzie Island’s postmaster), L. Goldsmith and W. Stafford re-staked the claims in the 1930’s, that exploration and development began on the site. Abino Gold Mines incorporated in 1939 and the company started doing exploratory trenching, drilling and surveying in 1945.
In 1960 ViolaMac Mining Ltd became the majority shareholder in Abino Gold Mines. Head of ViolaMac Mining, mine financier Violet McMillan (Canadian Mining Hall of Fame, 1991) became the president of the company. A 152.4-metre (500-foot) shaft with three levels was sunk late in 1960. Results of underground exploration showed similarities to the Dickenson Mines deposit. By the end of 1960, Arthur W. White, the president of Dickenson Mines bought controlling interest in ViolaMac Mining. Abino Gold Mines became a subsidiary of Dickenson Mines.
In 1982 Abino Gold Mines joined with nine other companies to form Goldquest Explorations. In 1983 Goldquest Explorations sank a new decline shaft and between 1985 and 1986 they produced 1,397 ounces of gold. In 1997 Goldquest Explorations was absorbed into Goldcorp Inc.
