fish Stories
The Red Lake Regional Heritage Centre's 2016 summer exhibit was all about fishing. Opening on June 9th, the exhibit 'Fish Stories' was a nod to the history of Red Lake's fishing past. The exhibit was curated by Lisa Hughes with the assistance of Morgan Woodhouse. Heritage Centre Staff would also like to thank all those that volunteered and partnered with us for this exhibit. Without generous contributions of time, advice and creativity, this project would not have been successful.
A very special thank you goes to the Red Lake District High School and it's art students. Art classes contributed works of art which were featured in the main hall and reflected Red Lake's fishing past, present and future. Thank you, Stephanie Coulson, the teacher that approached Heritage Centre staff about the idea of partnering with the high school. The opening of the exhibit was extremely successful. One hundred eighteen people attended the opening night including many proud parents, fishing enthusiasts and history buffs. The exhibit explored the history of fishing camps; commercial fishing; the importance of fishing to the First Nations people past, present and future; fishing tournaments/tourism; and what exactly makes fishing in Red Lake so special.
