Buffalo Red Lake Mines was incorporated in 1928 to obtain claims from the Buffalo Red Lake Syndicate and the Red Lake Prospector’s Syndicate. Some of Red Lake’s most notable mining personalities staked the Buffalo Red Lake Mines claims in 1925. The Buffalo Red Lake Syndicate was made up of Bill and Ed Cochenour (Cochenour-Willans Gold Mines) and the Red Lake Prospector’s Syndicate was established by Jack Hammell (Howey Gold Mines, Hasaga Gold Mines, Uchi Gold Mines) to acquire claims from Ray Howey.
From 1925 to 1947, the companies completed trenching, stripping, diamond drilling (8,840 metres - 29,002.6 feet) and test pitting. Hoping to get a better understanding of the geology, Buffalo Red Lake Mines sank a two compartment shaft in 1945-1946. However, work ceased on the claims after underground exploration proved the erratic gold values indicated by surface exploration.
Wilanour Resources (Cochenour-Willans Gold Mines) optioned the Buffalo Red Lake Mines claims in 1980 and went on to complete 6,600 metres (21,653.5 feet) of surface diamond drilling. Wilanour Resources also excavated a small open pit. From 1981 to 1982, Wilanour Resources processed a bulk sample and produced 1,656 ounces of gold.
Today, the Buffalo Red Lake Mines property is part of Premier Gold Mines' Hasaga exploration project.
