McFinley Mines
Non-producing
McFinley Mines consisted of 18 mining claims on East Bay, north of Cochenour. The claims were first staked by Findley McCallum, who originally came to Red Lake during the 1922 silver rush. He saw potential in Red Lake as a gold district and returned in 1926, staking part of what would become McFinley Mines. In the 1930’s Findley’s company McCallum Red Lake Mines began stripping and trenching the site. In 1933 Wilson Red Lake Mines staked claims adjacent to the McCallum property and performed limited diamond drilling throughout the early 1940’s.
McFinley Red Lake Gold Mines incorporated in 1943 to obtain claims from Wilson Red Lake Mines and McCallum Red Lake Mines. By 1944, the company reorganized and became known as McFinley Mines. From 1944 to 1946, McFinley Mines undertook geological mapping, trenching, surveying and diamond drilling. McFinley Mines sunk a 129-metre (423-foot) shaft in 1957, followed by underground diamond drilling. Work on the site was limited until 1975 when the company undertook a magnetometer survey. Bulk sampling and further diamond drilling happened on the site during the early 1980’s, and in 1984 Phoenix Gold Mines obtained the property. From 1984 to 1988, Phoenix Gold Mines reopened the McFinley shaft, did over 600 metres (1969 feet) of underground development and 32,331 metres (106,073 feet) of diamond drilling. In 2002, Rubicon Minerals took over ownership of the property.
