trip planning

things to know

Trip Planning

Careful planning before your trip to the Woodland Caribou Provincial Park will ensure you have a safe and memorable backcountry experience.

There are a variety of options when it comes to starting to plan for your trip and some of the more popular ones are listed below...
Picture
  • Utilizing reference materials and resources from the WCPP office to assist in picking out a route best suited for you. Click here to link to the official Park webpage for more information
    • The knowledgeable staff are also available to answer questions / concerns and provide a great overview of the Park information and updates
  • Contacting a local outfitter can provide for a more personalized one-on-one route planning session. Local outfitters also provide other services such as meal plans, equipment rental, shuttles to WCPP, and guided tours
  • Some good outfitters include:
    • Goldseekers Canoe Outfitting & Wilderness Expleditions
    • Red Lake Outfitters
    • Sunset Canoe Outfitting
    • Viking Island
    • Click here to learn more about booking interior permit fees!
  • Some examples of best practices to reduce your impact include:
    • Using established campsites
    • Adopting the "leave no trace" principle
    • Leave objects in the Park where they are found (rocks, shed antlers, artifacts, etc...) * This is more than a best practice, it is a regulation within WCPP

Here are a few questions you can ask yourself right now!

  • What do I want to do?
    • Having an idea of what you want to get out your backcountry experience will help you in asking the right questions and prepare properly for an amazing adventure.
      • Do I want to spend the majority of my time fishing?
      • Do I want to paddle and camp at leisure?
      • Do I enjoy sketching or photography?
      • Do I want to camp at an established campsite or seek accommodations at one of the remote lodges found in WCPP?
  • How am I getting there?
    • There are currently 20 approved access points into WCPP, be it by waterway, road, or air. You can get more information about transportation from the WCPP Office or any local outfitter offering services to the Park.
  • How long am I staying?
    • Plan accordingly for the number of days / nights you will be staying in the Park.
      • How you register for a Park permit will depend on your length of stay
      • Length of stay will also dictate the type of fishing license you obtain, food to pack, clothing, and gear to bring

There is much more to consider / know when planning for your trip to the Park. An example would include familiarizing oneself with the Parks Rules and Regulations. You can click here to view the WCPP brochure.

Again, everything you'll need to know can be discovered through the Park Office or a local outfitter.

If you're interested in learning even more about past / current trip planning essentials for the WCPP click here.

Remember, the amount of time and effort put into planning a trip to the Park will correlate with the experience there!

Feel free to come out to the Woodland Caribou Provincial Park Exhibition at the Heritage Centre on any open hours to learn much more!
